Safe storage is a big part of preventing prescription drug misuse. It is not just a smart idea — it is a responsibility. Keeping your medications secured and out of reach takes very little time and keeps children, pets, family, and visitors safe.

Bring unwanted, unused, or expired medications to a drug take back location.

DISPOSING OF UNWANTED PRESCRIPTIONS

Safe disposal is very important for those who no longer wish to use their unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs.

DO
  • Drop unused prescription medications off at one of the many drug take back locations across the state. Many local Police Departments, Sheriff’s Offices and pharmacies will take unused prescriptions. Contact them first to be sure.
DON'T
  • Flush medications down the drain, which can contaminate Maine’s water supply. 
  • Throw medications away in home or workplace trash, as they may end up being found.

  • Prescription medications (except for controlled substances at pharmacies)
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications
  • Veterinary medications
  • Vitamins
  • Medicated ointments/lotions
  • Liquid medicines (leak-proof containers up to 12 oz.)
  • Inhalers

ITEMS YOU CAN NOT TAKE BACK

  • Sharps/syringes
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Thermometers
  • Beauty products (non-medicated)
  • Infectious waste (sharps, blades, or other dangerous to handle waste)
  • Empty containers
